Abstract

Introduction

Dermatopathology serves as a critical foundation for accurate diagnosis in dermatology clinics; however, it remains underdeveloped or absent in many pathology departments across Sub-Saharan Africa

Methods

A cross sectional study of skin biopsies at a newly established dermatopathology unit of a sub-Saharan Africa was undertaken.

Results

A total of 404 skin biopsies were diagnosed during the study period. Inflammatory dermatoses comprised the predominant category diagnosed at 61.2%. Papulosquamous skin diseases formed the majority of inflammatory dermatoses group. Eczematous diseases and infections, which are predominately seen in the dermatology clinic, were less common in our study.

Conclusion

This study highlights the diverse patterns observed in dermatopathology practice at our institution. Papulosquamous disorders and cutaneous tumors emerged as the most commonly encountered conditions. Additionally, the study underscores the discrepancy between the spectrum of skin diseases initially seen in the dermatology clinic and those ultimately selected for biopsy.
