Menopause is a natural yet often challenging transition in a woman’s life, impacting physical health, emotional well-being, and daily functioning. This letter responds to the study "Age of Onset of Menopause and Factors Associated with Common Symptoms among Women in Lusaka District, Zambia" by Mulenga and Vwalika, acknowledging its valuable contribution to understanding menopause in Zambia. While the study provides crucial data on the average age of menopause (47.4 years) and common symptoms such as back pain, headaches, and mood changes, this commentary highlights areas for further exploration. It raises concerns about selection bias due to the study’s hospital-based sample, the unexpectedly low prevalence of reported mood disturbances (24%), and the need for deeper investigation into the link between widowhood and back pain. Additionally, it calls for community-based research and standardized mental health assessments to capture the full spectrum of menopausal experiences. As menopause remains a largely unspoken topic in many communities, this letter emphasizes the urgent need for greater awareness, accessible healthcare support, and holistic interventions to help women navigate this phase with dignity and well-being.
